Law and the Climate Emergency

How are lawyers and law firms contributing to the fight against climate change? Will the pandemic slow or quicken the transition to a net zero world? 

 

esela - The legal network for social impact and The Chancery Lane Project will host an online panel on the topic of ‘Law and the Climate Emergency’ during London Climate Action Week Digital. 

 

Many commentators have suggested that the pandemic is a dress rehearsal for the social and economic challenges of the climate emergency. This event will explore the role of law, lawyers and collaboration in the fight against climate change. 

 

Join the event to find out about initiatives driven by collectives of lawyers, investors and businesses who are showing leadership and contributing to a coordinated response, and how you can be part of the transition.

Starting at the event, The Chancery Lane Project will be hosting a 48 hour virtual hackathon. The purpose of the hackathon will be to generate the ‘origin stories’ for the next version of their Climate Contract Playbook, the second version of which will be published as part of the week’s events.

Fiduciary Duty in a Changing World: Impact Investing - the Why and How

How should pension funds, which hold some of the largest pools of capital in the world but have strict fiduciary duties, approach impact investment? 

 

esela - The legal network for social impact and the Impact Investing Institute host an online panel on the topic of ‘Fiduciary Duty in a Changing World:  Impact Investing - the Why and How'. 

 

This event will explore - from legal and investor perspectives - why and how pension trustees can engage positively with impact investment in a way which is consistent with their fiduciary duties. It will also examine some of the governance and practical principles pension trustees and other fiduciaries will wish to follow in a rapidly changing world.

Speakers will present and discuss the conclusions of recent work by the Impact Investing Institute and its legal panel. Join the session for a first look at the ‘Impact Investment Code’, which outlines good governance principles for pension trustees.

 

The Impact Investing Institute warmly invites feedback on the discussion and the Code, and will provide opportunities to engage both during and following the event.

esela - The legal network for social impact will host an online panel on the topic of ‘Growing the Pie: Wealth, Ownership and the Law' featuring Alex Edmans, Professor of Finance at London Business School and author of 'Grow the Pie: How Great Companies Deliver Both Purpose and Profit' [Financial Times Business Book of the Month, March 2020].  This session will be chaired by Sarah Ellington, Legal Director at DLA Piper.

Following the interview, there will be a period of Q&A. You are invited to submit questions for Alex Edmans about purpose and profit and his most recent publication in advance of the session.
