This online event is hosted by esela - The legal network for social impact and the APAC Impact Lawyers.
Moderated by the newly elected chair of esela APAC Impact Lawyers, Steven Moe of Parry Field Lawyers, this event considers the question "What does it mean to be an Impact Lawyer in Asia Pacific?"
Speakers will share their experiences of navigating a career to develop environmental, impact investing and profit with purpose specialisms. The session will cover motivations, obstacles and career highlights, and provide insights of relevance to lawyers on this journey.

Kate Hodson, Head of ESG (Legal), Partner, Ogier
Kate Hodson is a partner in Ogier’s investment funds practice and Head of ESG (Legal). As a seasoned funds lawyer, Kate took proactive steps to alter her career path and develop her practice to focus on sustainable investing and ESG. She undertook a Masters in Energy and Environmental Law from the Chinese University of Hong Kong where she achieved a Scholarship for Academic Excellence and the Gane Prize. Meanwhile she founded Ogier's Sustainable Investing and Impact Funds practice and subsequently presented the business case to Ogier for building out a Sustainable Investing and ESG consultancy which was launched in 2020. Together with Ogier's Head of ESG and Impact she founded Ogier's Talent4Impact programme, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, in partnership with Dream Impact and the Sustainable Finance Initiative. Passionate about both environmental and social issues, Kate serves as part of the leadership team for Ogier's Diversity and Inclusion initiative and is an active member of Ogier's environmental working group. Outside of the office Kate is committed to conservation efforts and works with the World Wide Fund for Nature - Hong Kong, sitting on its executive committee and finance committee and is a supporter of its bankable nature solutions work.
Amrut Joshi, Founder, GameChanger Law Advisors
Amrut founded GLA in 2011, after having previously worked with some of India’s most reputed law firms He is a seasoned corporate and commercial lawyer with more than 17 (Seventeen) years of post-qualification experience. He spearheads GLA’s venture capital, sports and social enterprises practices. During his career, Amrut has worked with several of India’s hottest startups, reputed venture capital and private equity firms, impact investment firms, consulting firms, social enterprises, angel investors, sports franchises and sportspersons.
Amrut has written and spoken on a range of hot-button corporate law, social enterprises law, technology law and sports law issues at various national and international platforms. In August 2020, he was chosen to serve as a consultant to organizations who are part of the prestigious Stanford Seed Transformation Program. In July 2021, Amrut graduated as a fellow from the inaugural cohort of the Asian Venture Philanthropy Network (AVPN) Impact Investment Fellowship.
Amrut graduated from the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru in 2003.
Steven Moe, Partner, Parry Field Lawyers
Steven is a partner at Parry Field Lawyers based in Christchurch in our commercial team and active supporting clients across the country. He has 20 years’ experience overall practising in New Zealand as well as in England, Australia and Japan and often helps start-ups as well as tech companies, investors, charities and social enterprises. He has a focus on empowering impact and often helps clients get their legal structures right
He published the book: “Social Enterprises in New Zealand: A Legal Handbook” and to educate and grow the impact ecosystem he hosts a weekly podcast “Seeds” www.theseeds.nz interviewing inspiring people with more than 255 interviews and more than 110,000 listens. He has a strong commercial focus having spent time working in-house as he has had two secondments to clients – the in-house legal team of the Japanese trading house Mitsui in Tokyo (2 years) and Caltex in Sydney (1 year).
Steven is an Edmund Hillary Fellow and frequent writer for publications like Spinoff with his list of article here. He grew up in Christchurch and graduated from Canterbury University. He currently holds a practising certificate for New Zealand but is also qualified in England & Wales and New South Wales.
After 3 years working at a national law firm in Wellington, Steven spent 11 years overseas working for an international law firm in Tokyo (4 years), London (3 years) and Sydney (4 years) before returning to New Zealand at the start of 2016.
